Breast Biopsy Guided by Ultrasound
An ultrasound-guided biopsy, performed under local anesthesia, uses ultrasound to guide the needle to the anomaly to take a sample through the skin. This technique is especially used when a lesion is small, non-palpable or it is not visible on ultrasound.
Procedure
A radiologist will ask you to remove your top and bra and lie on your back in an ultrasound room. The radiologist will then identify the location of the anomaly using ultrasound to find out where to introduce the needle. Then you will be asked to lie with one arm over your head while the radiologist monitors the needle on the ultrasound screen. The radiologist may need to place a metal staple for easy identification of the anomaly in case of surgery.
Duration
A breast biopsy lasts 20 to 30 minutes on an ambulatory (outpatient) basis. You should plan to spend a total of one hour at the clinic.
